In der Kategorie Juniorinnen gehörte Junioren-Weltmeisterin Marie-Êve DROLET zu den drei Finalistinnen.  | Men's ST Team is team of the year in got Canadian Sport Awards. Olympians Caroline Brunet (Canoeing) and Daniel Igali (Wrestling) were honoured as Canada's athletes of the year at the Canadian Sport Awards. As best teams the Men's ST squad (World Team Champion 2000) and Kally Law's curling rink (World Champion) are voted. ST Junior World champion Marie-Êve DROLET was one of the finalists.

Derrick Campbell hat seine Laufbahn bis auf weiteres beendet. Dies bestätigte Speedskating Canda auf Anfrage von packstyle.de. Es ist aber nicht ausgeschlossen, daß Campbell nach einem Jahr Pause in der Olympiasaison ein Comeback versucht. Derrick Cambell ritired. "He classified for the national Team but did not signed his contract so I don't know if he will retire completely or if he is just taking a year off before the Olympics", told a Speedskating Canda representive to packstyle.de.

Schnelles Eis in Calgary: Neue Weltrekorde Die zweite Reihe lief erstklassig: Die in Kanadas WM-Ausscheidung gescheiterten Läufer veranstalteten bei den "Canadian Opan" ein wahres Weltrekord-Festival. Über 1500 Meter unterbot der 26jährige Andrew QUINN in 2:15,495 die alte Marke von Kai FENG (CHN) um 5/1000 Sekunden. Andrew LAHEY lief als Dritter hinter Jeff SCHOLTEN (2:15,685) in 2:15,868 neuen Junioren-Weltrekord (bisher 2:17,22 Steve ROBLLIARD, CAN). Über 500 Meter unterbot SCHOLTEN in 41,742 die bisherige Bestmarke den Italieners Nicola FRANCESCHINA (41,938) um fast zwei Zehntel "Ich habe mich top in Form gefühlt, aber es ist trotzdem eine kleine Sensation", sagte QUINN, der die gesamte Weltcup-Serie bestritten hat, "die Eisbedingungen waren ideal. Die 1500 Meter sind normalerweise ein taktisches Rennen, in dem viele Faktoren eine Rolle spielen, und oft geht es langsam los. Diesmal ging es von der ersten Runde an zu Sache. Ich war zur rechten Zeit am rechten Platz." Und SCHOLTEN, der auf den Erfolg brannte, nachdem er die WM-Ausscheidung um einen Punbkt verpaßt hatte, kommentierte seinen Rekord so: "Ich hab es noch gar nicht richtig begriffen. Ich wußte eigentlich, daß iche s drauf habe, weil ich all die jahre schon so nahe dran war. Ich bin selbstbewußter geworden, und es ist großartig, daß alles zusammenlief." Am Sonntag gab es noch zwei Weltrekorde binnen einer Stunde. Im 1000-m-Halbfinale vebesserte QUINN den alten Rekord von KIM Dong-Sung (SKO) auf 1:26,992, was SCHOLTEN im Finale mit 1:26,970 noch einmal toppen konnte. Fast ice in Calgary: New World Records Reserves are first class: The skaters eliminated at Canadian trials für World Championships smashed several World Records at Canadian Open. In a very fast 1500 m final race from beginning to finish the clock stopps at 2:15,495 for Andrew QUINN (new WR), 2:15,685 for Jeff SCHOLTEN and 2.15,868 for Andrey LAHEY (new Junior's WR). Scholten sets his own World Record at 500 m race: 41,742 - two tenth lesser than Nicola FRANCESCHINA's 1998 time. "I felt great today but it's still a bit of a surprise," said QUINN, 26, who struggled most of this season on the World Cup circuit. "Certainly the ice conditions were ideal and I felt I could skate very fast. The 1500 is such a tactical race, a lot of factors come into play and the race can be slow or fast. This one was a very up-tempo. I was in the right place at the right time." "It hasn't really sunk in yet," said SCHOLTEN, 22, a gold medallist in the 500 at the World Cup final last month. "I knew I could do it because I've been close all year. I went in confident, so it was great to see that everything come together." On Sunday Jeff SCHOLTEN, 22, broke his second world mark Sunday in the men's 1000 meters, clocking one minute and 26.970 seconds.
