Marinella CANCLINI of Italy retires. Italian skater Marinella CANCLINI (25) retires and says goodbye at the conclusion of the European championships. She was one of the most important short track speed skaters of the 90's. CANCLINI was relay world champion in 1996 and six times European champion (three times overall individual, three times relay). She has broken several world records, her first 1992 in Albertville , her last 1999 at Oberstdorf. Marinella CANCLINIlost her 500m world record (44,62) just one day after the saying goodbye in her home rink in Bormio to Katia ZINI (44,55).

New 500 m ladies world record: Katia ZINI of Italy in CANCLINI's footprints. The same situation as last year: At the ladies 500 m final Jewgenia RADANOWA is leading, but she is passed in the last lap by an Italian breaking world record. The only difference: 1999 it was Marinella Canclini, this time it was the 18 years old junior skater Katia ZINI. The clock stops at 44.55 seconds for ZINI and at 44.57 seconds for RADANOWA. The Bulgarian was below Canclini's old mark (44,62) too.

New European Champion title: Jewgenia RADANOWA of Bulgaria. Evgenia Radanova is the first Non-Italian overall winner in the history of the European championships. She won three distances (1000 m, 1500 m, 3000 m) and became runner-up over 500m. At present RADANOWA is the only European able to compete against skaters of China and Korea.

Fourth time European champion: Fabio CARTA of Italy. The fight to become European champion was very interesting, because before the 3000m final there were three skaters in contention for the crown: the 1000m winner and overall leader Nicola Franceschina of Italy, the 1500 m winner Nicky GOOCH of England and the three time champion and 500 m winner Fabio CARTA of Italy. The field began slowly, and Bruno Loscos of France broke away. His lead increased fast to almost a three quarters of a lap. When the Frenchman's lap times started decreasing, Carta decided to chase. Carta took a half a lap lead. While Loscos dropped back, MicheleAntonioli of Italy increased the speed of the pack, and only GOOCH could follow, but not Franceschina. So Antonioli, who had no chance of winning a medal, helped the Englishman to win silver, for Franceschina there was only the bronze. Fabio CARTA was the cheered hero of the 3000 m final and the championships, because he won also gold with the relay. His overall victory was his fourth consecutively.

Relay finals: No surprises, Gold for Bulgaria and Italy. The favorites Bulgaria (ladies) and Italy (men) got the relay victories. Bulgaria won then Italy and Great Britain, and Italy was followed by Great Britain and France. In the semi-final this was the setting: They were all finalists of the previous year in same heat: Italy (last year's 1st), the Netherlands (2nd), Great Britain (3rd) and Germany (4th), but only two could advance to the final.

Discussion about new world championship regulations. Beside the European championships there were some discussions between team leaders of participating national federations. The reason was a possible reform of European and World championships. Most of them approve to award single distance champions too in future. Probably the ISU congress in June 2000 in Quebec will vote about such a suggestion.

Marinella CANCLINI beendet ihre Karriere. Die Italienierin Marinella CANCLINI (25) hat am Rande der EM ihre Karriere beendet und wurde in ihrer Heimatstadt Bormio herzlich verabschiedet. CANCLINI war eine der prägenden Shorttrackerinnen der 90er Jahre. Sie war sechsmal Europameisterin (1997-99 Staffel und Mehrkampf), Staffel-Weltmeister 1996 und lief mehrere Weltrekorde, den ersten bei den olympischen Spielen 1992 in Albertville, den letzten bei den EM 1999 in Oberstdorf (44,64 500 Meter). Den verlor sie wenige Stunden nach ihrer Verabschiedung an Katia ZINI.

Neuer 500-m-Weltrekord: Katia ZINI in CANCLINIs Fußtapfen. Es war die gleiche Situation wie ein Jahr zuvor: Im 500-m-Endlauf der Frauen für Jewgenia RADANOWA, aber in der letzten Runde wird sie von einer Italienerin überholt, die Weltrekord läuft. Der einzige Unterschied: 1999 war es Marinella CANCLINI, 2000 die erst 18 Jahre alte Katia ZINI. Die Uhr blieb stehen bei 44,55 Sekunden für ZINI. Auch RADANOWA blieb unter der alrten Marke (44,57).

Neue Mehrkampf-Europameisterin: Jewgenia RADANOWA (Bulgarien). Ewgenia RADANOWA wurde als erster Nicht-Italiener in der Geschichte Mehrkampf-Europameister. Sie gewann drei Strecken (1000 m, 1500 m, 30000 m) und wurde über 500 Meter Zweite. Gegenwärtig ist RADANOWA die einzige Europäerin, die gegen die Weltspitze aus Asien bestehen kann.

Zum Vierten Mal Europameister: Fabio CARTA (Italien). Doch der Weg dorthin war recht spannend, die Entscheidung fiel erst im 3000-m-Rennen. Vor diesem konnten noch drei Shorttracker die Krone erringen: der 1000-m-Sieger und in der Gesamtwertung führende Nicola FRANCESCHINA (Italien), der 1500-m-Sieger Nicky GOOCH (Großbritannien) und eben CARTA, der die 500 Meter gewonnen hatte. Doch als das Feld frieslich loslief, was es ein anderer, der sein Heil in der Flucht suchte: Bruno LOSCOS, der Franzose. Die Hoffnung, er werde einbrechen, erfüllte sich zunächst nicht, er baute seine Führung auf eine dreiviertel Runde aus. CARTA entschloß sich zur Verfolgung und gewann ebenfalls eine halbe Runde. Während LOSCOS einbrach, zog der italiener Michele ANTONIOLI, der keine Chance mehr hatte eine Medaille zu gewinnen, das Tempo im Hauptfeld an und GOOCH folge. So verhalf ANTONIOLI dem Engländer zu Silber, FRANCESCHINA gewann Bronze.

Staffelentscheidungen: Keine Überraschungen, Titel an Bulgarien und Italien. Die favorisierten Frauen aus Bulgarien und Männeraus Italien holten sich die Staffel-Goldmedaillen. Bulgarien gewann vor Italien und Großbrittanien, Italien schlug Großbritannien und Frankreich. Im Semifinale hatte es eine daramtische Ansetzung gegeben. Mit Titelverteidiger Italien, dem Vorjahres-Zweiten Niederlande, dem Dritten Großbritannien und dem Vierten Deutschland geb es das komplette Finale von Oberstdorf 1999 in Bormio bereits im Halbfinale - aber nur zwei konnten das Finale erreichen.

Diskussion über mögliche Änderung im WM-Reglement. Am Rande der EM wurden einige interessante Diskussionen unter den Mannschaftleitern und Vertretern der nationalen verbände geführt. Ausgangspunkt ist der Vorschlag, künftig bei Mehrkampf-Weltmeisterschaften (und EM) auch Einzelstrecken-Meister über 500, 1000 und 1500 Meter zu küren. Die Entscheidung fällt beim ISU-Kongress im Juni 2000 in Quebec.
